AANA Contracting Wins Roof Bid For My Ann Arbor Home

Posted by admin on November 16th, 2010

AANA Contracting, a company based in Canton just East of Ann Arbor, came up in first place in our choice of roofing companies.

I met with the Founder Bob Ahern last week and he impressed me with his low-key presentation focusing on installing a quality shingle the way the manufacturer wants it installed. He was also very willing to discuss our special needs and the specific type of ridge venting we wanted to use.

I’ve met a lot of good roofers but Bob was clearly interested in my business and interested in providing a quality roof.

You can reach Bob at 734-776-1099.

We ended up with a Certainteed Landmark Premium “50 year” shingle and we are very pleased with how the roof looks.

Finally, I’m Ready to Choose an Ann Arbor Roofing Contractor

Posted by admin on October 14th, 2010

Back in August I thought we were ready to go, but then we ended up moving our office and changing our kitchen vent plan.

Now we are in the new office and we are just putting in a recirculating range hood, so, I need to choose a roofer!

Here is a list of the basics:

  1. The home is on Ann Arbor’s far West side.
  2. The home is a medium sized ranch with an attached garage.
  3. There is a walk out back yard so there is a two story drop there.
  4. There is about 3,100 total square feet of roof.
  5. The roof is 5/12 pitch
  6. Soffit is already fully vented. (This was one of the summer projects.) The current can vents will be changed to a continuous ridge vent. Either Shingle Vent II or Snow Country or equivalent.
  7. The roof isn’t leaking currently, but there are probably some sheathing boards that will need to be replaced.
  8. There are two layers of shingles to remove. One from 1966 when the home was built. One from 1992.
  9. There are two noticeable sags that need to be adjusted where there are inside walls. (The walls aren’t sagging but the rafters on either side are.)
  10. There are no valleys. Just one 20′ length that needs to be flashed.
  11. The two gable vents need to be closed.
  12. The two bathroom vents need to exit out the roof with dedicated bath vents.

I hope to make a decision this week. I am ready. If you are interested in talking to me about this job and about being visible online, call me at 734-945-1593 ASAP.

Just about ready for my new Ann Arbor roof & the contractors

Posted by admin on August 23rd, 2010

I guess I need to make a few follow-up calls to roofing contractors but I’m about ready to move ahead on my new roof. Here is the rundown:

I am going to use a 50 Year or Lifetime rates shingle. Since we may be putting a solar array on the front of the house I want to get the best practical shingle I can so it won’t fail before the solar panels do. (Solar panels are typically guaranteed for over 20 years and some are still producing at about 80% of their original output after 40 years.)

I am also going to specify Shingle Vent II or Snow Country ridge vent. One smart home inspector says he thinks Snow Country is the best but I’ve also been impress with Shingle Vent II. On the other hand I’ve seen a lot of ridge vents that let in snow. I’d like to avoid that.

I just had our electric service line put underground so that should make the roof a little easier.

I have taken time to vent all the soffits. I now have about 12 square inches per linear foot of low vent area. That should keep the attic cooler and dryer in combination with the ridge vent.

I also want to vent the two bathroom fans out the roof.

That should be about it. Now off to get the job done!

The Basics Of Roofing With Clay Roof Tiles

As a home owner there are one or two things you must know. One is definitely roofing. At some point, your home’s home will need to be either repaired or replaced. The roof is important in keeping up its appearance as well as the obvious, keeping you shielded from Mother Nature.

However, before ripping off your old roof and installing new one made from roof tiles perhaps, it is a good idea to realize what you are getting into. You must think about hiring contractors, completion dates, the installation process and materials like clay roof tiles or other types of roofing tiles. The process of getting new roof can be tiring, but with the right planning, your home will look brand new thanks to a successful roofing project.

A new clay roofing tile roof is a daunting task for most homeowners. Many believe they can undertake this type of project on their own, only to discover later it is a task best left to a professional. It is important to plan out every detail of the project before spending any money since you could end up wasting a lot due to poor decisions. If you do decide to hire a professional roofer, the project is usually handled in a way which accommodates both the contractor and those living within the home. However, discuss completion dates with your contractor so everything can be planned accordingly.

Try to become knowledgeable on the many different materials used in roof covering. This can help you choose a roof which fits your personal tastes, climate needs, and budget. For example, you may like the look of roof tiles over metal sheets. The most common types of materials used in roofing are asphalt shingles, wood shingles, clay roof tiles, slate roofing tiles, metal roofing and a ceramic roof tile.

Roof tiles, for example, are very traditional and known for their ability to withstand in-climate weather such as wind, hail, fire and rain. Clay roof tiles are also very durable, often lasting as long as 50 years. These particular roofing tiles come in a variety of colors and styles to suit any home.

There are dozens of roofing tiles materials commonly uses; all of them are functional as well as decorative. Most homeowners choose their roofing material based on how it looks or what their local homeowners association mandates, instead of what

functions best.

The longevity of your roof tiles depends on the quality of the ceramic roof tile you choose. Using the best quality material adds both resale value and visual appeal to your home.
